How it works

Currencies and markets

Where you can sell, which currency buyers pay in, and which currency you are paid in.

SellAbroad reaches 150+ countries without you setting up local payments yourself. Which of those are active for your store is up to you, and two currencies are involved — usually different ones.

Which countries are active

You control the markets SellAbroad handles. How you set them depends on your platform:

  • Shopify — SellAbroad reads your Shopify Markets, and you list the countries the integration snippet activates. A market must exist and have shipping configured before a buyer there can check out.
  • WooCommerce — the plugin serves your international buyers once your store is registered. Talk to your account manager about which markets are enabled for your account.
  • Custom store — you send the buyer's country on each cart, and SellAbroad routes it through the markets configured for your account.

The currency the buyer pays in

Buyers can check out in their local currency. In the hosted checkout, SellAbroad detects the buyer's country and converts your displayed prices into that currency using live exchange rates, so a shopper in the United States sees US dollars and a shopper in Germany sees euros. With the Payment Container the buyer pays through your own checkout, so the prices shown there are whatever your store displays.

Which payment methods a buyer sees also depends on their country and currency — buy-now-pay-later in particular is only offered in the currencies those providers support.

Tax treatment can also vary by country. If your displayed prices already include destination tax, configure tax-inclusive pricing so SellAbroad extracts and displays the included tax without adding it to the total again.

The currency you are paid in

Your payouts are made in the currency configured for your account. It is independent of the currencies buyers pay in, so you receive one consistent currency no matter where a sale happened. See Getting paid.
